I believe what you are doing with your solicitation e-mail is a waste of time and insulting to employers. Think about it. You're saying to someone you don't know and who doesn't know you, "Here are my credentials. Now, you go figure out what to do with me."

Managers don't do that.

You don't even say what you want to do. Again, you're asking people you don't know to figure it out for you. What's truly stunning is that you have worked in human resources. You should know better.

You tout your sales expertise. There are better salesmen standing on corners handing out fliers. Imagine the sales manager who contacts you because she needs to close more deals. Perhaps you could produce an e-mail like that for her. She could buy a list and send it out, looking for sales. Yes, that's unbridled sarcasm and it's directed at you. Better that you hear it from me than from some manager who throws you out of an interview on your backside because you're wasting her time.

My fear is that this is what job hunting has come to. I know the economy is in the toilet. Companies are scattering their employees to the wind. Jobs are getting hard to find. Mass-mailing resumes to companies you don't know is bad enough. But if sending around random "job hunting" e-mails is a new trend, then I'm putting more filters on my Outlook.

Please, folks. Don't demean yourselves. Dumbing down your job-hunting efforts will just make you look dumb. The only way you will inspire a manager to call you is if you identify a problem or challenge she is facing, and then suggest how you're going to tackle it and make her business more successful.

Show how you can help. That's a lot of work. But if you're not willing to do it, why should anyone want to hire you? "Hey, I'd like you to give me a job, but don't expect me to even know what your business is. Just bring me in for an interview."

Managers today are very busy, sometimes frantic, trying to save their companies, their jobs, their employees and their own jobs. Why should any manager waste two seconds reading an e-mail that reveals no interest in, or understanding of, the manager's business?

Every person in the world has a work history. Who cares what yours is? You want a job? What job? First, do the hard work of identifying what an employer needs -- or why should the employer give you any work to do? Otherwise you're not worth talking to, and it's not worth reading your e-mail.

Try this exercise: How would you convince a manager -- who has no job openings -- to create a new job just for you?. (Read Create your next job but try to figure it out first.)

People and jobs are my business. When I read that one company has laid off 6,500 workers and another is about to lay off 15,000, I feel for all of them. But I imagine getting an e-mail like this from every single one of those people. What good is it? I'll jump over all those e-mails to talk with one person who does the job of showing me how he can help my business. That's who gets the one precious job. Because the work starts before the interview. And the interview is Day #1 on the job, talking shop.

Not ready to talk shop with me? This means you clearly don't have time for me. So don't waste my time.

When a person sends out a note like this, he's judged by his behavior. What behavior are you showing to the next employer you contact?

The whole world has been brainwashed to believe that all you must do is float your "information" around and someone will find a job for you to do. It isn't going to happen. Here's a shock: There aren't 400 jobs for you so don't mail out 400 solicitations.

Please, for your own good, pursue the jobs that you can add value to. Only you can figure out what they are. But your e-mail suggests one thing: You are aimless and mindless.

I'm sure you're not. If you want a job, Live like an exception. Show an employer that its business matters to you. Because that's how your competition gets hired.

Best,
Nick Corcodilos

Article: Curb Job Fear: Take control of your work life

Topic of the Week

Curb Job Fear

"The person who gets the farthest is generally the one who is willing to do and dare. The sure-thing boat never gets far from shore."

--Dale Carnegie

Last week I had two coaching conversations - one with a person who had been laid off from her job, and another with a gentleman who was concerned that it might happen to him. During our discussions, both people expressed concerns about relying on someone else for work. And, they each had a hidden desire to try working for themselves. So, I shared a newsletter I wrote a couple of years ago that included steps on how to do just that.

Given the job climate at the present time, I thought this idea (and these resources), might be a useful reminder for you, too. After all, when we work for ourselves there are several benefits - the freedom that comes from setting our own hours, the ability to work according to our own natural rhythms, the opportunity to schedule our personal needs around our work lives, and the chance to express our unique, creative talents. Yes, there's hard work and a learning curve, but there's also the satisfaction of knowing that every single hour invested directly benefits us and the people we care about.

With advances in technology, the opportunity to become self employed is becoming more of a reality than a dream. Some people set up their own websites to sell products (just look at the success of eBay), others use "freelance" type websites to advertise their skills to people who are in need of their services, and more and more people are taking the sub contractor route - working for more than one organization as a contract consultant, sharing specific talents that a variety of companies can use. These skills include things like: computer programming expertise, writing and/or editing services, research assistance, ,designing and/or maintaining websites, or the upkeep of social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace.

If you'd like to consider self-employment, I encourage you to consider a few key steps:

1. Take a basic business course. Many adult-ed organizations or local universities offer a "Start Your Own Business" type course where you can learn about the basics of planning, bookkeeping, or marketing, in a safe, supportive environment. This is a great way to challenge any preconceived assumptions you may have about yourself as a possible business owner. Learning about the realities of being self-employed will give you a chance to evaluate whether or not being a business owner makes sense for who you are. When looking for a course, make sure you find one taught by a successful, well-established teacher with business experience.

2. Know what you have to offer. Identify the skills and talents you possess that would be useful to others (trust me, everyone has something to offer). If you're not sure, consider a session or two with a career coach who can objectively help you assess your skill level with appropriate questions and tests. If you discover that you don't have enough experience to offer a viable service just yet, you'll at least know where your interests lie and where to invest in additional training.

3. See what's out there. Spend some time looking through websites like craigslist.com, freelancer.com, or guru.com to see the kinds of services being offered by others. You might be pleasantly surprised to discover that there are people just like you who are already earning a living working for themselves. As you review the listings, take note of several things. First, what words or phrases are being used to describe the type of work that's similar to what you might offer? Write them down. They'll come in handy if you should decide to create your own listing at some point in the future. Can you locate any pricing information that might help you determine your fees? What qualifications seem to make the most impact?

4. Test the waters. There are some of you reading this newsletter who are ready to see whether or not there might be a market for your services. Why not take a chance and offer them on a part-time basis? Post your skills on one of the websites listed above and see what happens. What have you go to lose? Except maybe your fear or dead-end job :).

While I know there are many factors to consider when working on your own - health insurance costs, cash flow, or the need to market your services consistently, this newsletter is meant as a source of inspiration, encouraging you to keep your eyes wide open for soul-nourishing work options. If there's one thing I know for sure, it's that when we take steps that honor our soul, doors open, and opportunities often fall into place. If you're willing to take a bold move toward something you dream about, there's a good chance that you'll get a Divine boost.

Take Action Challenge

One step. That's all you have to do this week. If you've thought about becoming self-employed, or if you're worrying about your job, take control of your work life and do something about it this week. Choose one step above and start a little research. It can't hurt. And, it just might take your life in a whole new, exciting direction!

Article: Networking - Does it still work?

Networking - Does it still work?
by Robin Ryan
"Networking" was the biggest buzz word of the 90's. To get a job or grow a business, all you had to do was network. Bill Gates' initial deal with IBM, in which they bought and added the MS DOS operating system to all their PC's, was a result of networking. Bill's mother worked on a Board of Directors with IBM's president, and that contact started Microsoft's incredible rise to the top. Likewise, savvy job hunters knew that developing contacts lead to discovering many great jobs that were never advertised. And, with 85% of all jobs not appearing in the want ads, networking was a great job hunting tool. But does it still work today? Before I answer that question, let's look at what has happened.

Many job hunters, frantic to find a job, raced from contact to contact, monopolizing people's time, becoming bothersome and pushy. It got to the point that many managers and executives refused to attend association functions because of all the job hunters there. Waiting to pounce on them. Networking never yielded instant success -- thus job hunters and business owners alike become frustrated with poor leads and the lengthy time frame it took to see results.

Today, networking is still an important career management tool. But it must be cultivated over a lifetime. Memberships in clubs, groups and associations can not start the day you need a job. By actively participating in professional and community organizations you become known to others, and these contacts will lead you to various opportunities that may eventually enhance and expand your career. Use these effective guidelines to network and still obtain positive results:

Plan your networking activities. Define the groups to attend, the types of people you need to meet, and think of what you can offer others. Make lists of new contacts including ways to meet them. Arrange a networking activity and time every week.

Join organizations and become a visible contributor. Serve on committees so other members know and recognize you. Make efforts to help others whenever possible, so they in return will be happy to help you.

Develop a 20-second introduction that reveals your name, job title and a brief summary of your work expertise and background. Don't assume people know what you do and what your best talents are, tell them.

Never ask for a job. Instead, ask for no more than 15 minutes of advice to direct you on your job search. Reassure the person that, although you are job hunting, you don't expect them to know about or have a job for you. This alleviates any uncomfortable expectations and allows the contact to be more at ease and helpful. Always ask for referrals and send a thank you note.

Develop a list of 15-20 companies that have the job you seek. Share the list with your contacts and ask them for other companies that you should also consider. Follow-up by asking if they know someone who works at any of the companies on your list - and then contact the referral.

Start networking with people you know. Anyone can help you - neighbors, family, friends - everyone knows someone, so don't limit yourself to just colleagues in your field.

Article: Top 5 Ways to Improve Your Resume

Top 5 Ways to Improve Your Resume
by Robin Ryan
Does your resume stand out? Will employers quickly see you are the one to do the job? Your resume has less than 15 seconds to capture an employer’s attention according to our national survey of 600 hiring managers published in the book, Winning Resumes. You must also incorporate effective keywords or the electronic search tools will never put you on the hiring manager’s screen. To learn how you compare to other candidates, take our Resume Assessment Quiz. Resume writing is a critical skill advancing your career, so here are some of the top survey results to follow.

Emphasize RESULTS! This was #1 with all surveyed employers. Accomplishments get attention, not just job descriptions. State the action you performed and then note the achieved results. Include details about what you increased or decreased. Use numbers to reflect, how much, how many, and percentage of gain or reduction. Stress money earned or time saved. For example: Managed the project implementing a new tracking system that resulted in a 17% decrease in cost overruns, saving $200,000.

SPECIFICS SELL. Vague, general resumes don't cut it, employers say. Target each resume to the job sought. Incorporate only the information pertinent to doing that specific job title in the resume. This will alleviate the tendency to crowd your resume with too much non-related information, or too much detail on jobs more than ten years in your past. Start each sentence with a descriptive action verb — such as directed, organized, established, created, planned, etc. as they add powerful impact to your sentences.

DO Not LIE! A USA TODAY survey of executives stated that over 50% tried to exaggerate their skills, which was almost always uncovered during interviews and reference checks. Lying resulted in candidates not getting the job, or worse, being fired once the fraud was revealed. Employers are on the lookout for this misrepresentation so be as positive as possible without exaggerating or misstating the truth.

Big Mistakes MUST be Avoided. The TOP mistake annoying every manager and HR person in our survey was spelling mistakes and typos. Many said: "I stop reading when I find spelling mistakes." Typos scream: "Don’t hire me." Proofread – you can’t trust computer spell checkers. Cramming too much into a resume and using microscopic fonts can result in your resume never being read. Make your resume visually appealing on paper with font sizes in 11 or 12 points. Use concise sentences and adequate white space between points. Many online resume-posting programs incorrectly read boxes and graphic designs causing unintentional page breaks, so be sure to avoid using these. Also, many home computers use a mini-word processing program called WORKS, which is not compatible and can’t be read by many employers’ business computers that use MS WORD. Be certain you only use WORD in any communications you send on to employers.

THE FINAL TEST -- IS YOUR RESUME GETTING RESULTS? Are employers calling on appropriate jobs you are qualified for (not over or under) to perform? If not, rework your resume, or get professional help to improve yours, since a great resume is the prelude to landing a terrific job.

Article: Cover Letter Tip: 'Thank You' Magic

By Jimmy Sweeney, President of CareerJimmy and Author of the new, Amazing Cover Letter Creator

The holiday decorations are down. The carolers have put away their songbooks. A new calendar page awaits your comments and appointments and to-do list. It's also time to say thank you to everyone who sent you a gift or a card or a cheery e-mail.

It's also an ideal time to spread your appreciation to your business pursuits and contacts. As you write your cover letter to prospective employers, be sure to tuck in a few words of gratitude for the opportunity to introduce yourself and your skills, even as you ask for an interview for the job you want.

"Gratitude is the rosemary of the heart,"
according to 19th century American writer, Minna Antrim.

Keep in mind that the hiring manager has no obligation to respond to your cover letter. But if you sprinkle your letter with a bit of 'rosemary' he or she won't be able to resist contacting you. Why? Because you will be among the very few who are more concerned with gratitude than greed. You will display your good heart and your interest in others, not just yourself. This small addition to any cover letter will put you in a class by yourself and it will be a signal that you are someone who would be a welcome addition to the company staff.

Ways to Say 'Thank you' Within Your Cover Letter

Use clear and simple language in your cover letter to convey your appreciation while at the same time displaying your talent and skills for the job you are interested in.
Thank you for taking a moment to consider my cover letter and resume. I appreciate how busy you are.
I appreciate the time you give to prospective employees such as me. I do not take it for granted.
I welcome a chance to talk with you about my skills and your expectations. Thank you for this opportunity to hear about your company and to share how I might fit into your plans.
I appreciate the job application guidelines you provided online. I'd like very much the opportunity to express my thanks in person for making it easy to introduce myself and my background and to find out how I can contribute to your company.
Avoid gushing or being sentimental. Focus on clarity and sincerity. You have what it takes to land the job you want. Make gratitude a high priority and you will succeed.

Jimmy Sweeney is the president of CareerJimmy and author of the new, "Amazing Cover Letter Creator". Jimmy is also the author of several career-related books and writes a monthly article titled, "Job-Search Secrets."

Article: Getting Insider Information Before the Interview

Getting Insider Information Before The Interview

by: Michael R. Neece CEO, InterviewMastery.com

The balance of power during job interviews changed with the widespread use of networking sites like LinkedIn, Plaxo, MySpace, and FaceBook. These sites provide a highly visible place for individuals to create profiles and selectively disclose elements of their life.

Companies search these sites to prescreen applicants even before inviting them for interviews. The resume and cover letter are no longer the only data sources used by companies when deciding on job applicants.

Many articles stress the importance of candidates managing their online profiles in this world of online transparency. But the sword of Internet transparency cuts from both sides of the blade. Interviewers often have online profiles that candidates can search before walking through the interview door.

This job search environment is unique from previous recessions because both interviewers and applicants have equal access to information about individuals and organizations.

The Internet provides tools that job applicants can use to research companies and people. Business-oriented networks like LinkedIn provide tools to see through organizational walls and learn valuable company-specific data that can help throughout the interviewing cycle.

Hoovers.com, ZoomInfo.com and HighBeam.com provide access to publicly available company and individual information from multiple news sources. Pubic companies must disclose more data than private companies due to investment and securities laws. Individuals can access a company's quarterly and annual reports to learn valuable details that help prepare for job interviews. Private companies can also be researched through their press releases, professional associations and the annual reports of competitors.

Before your next interview try the following to enhance your knowledge of the company and the interviewers:

Public Companies
Download the company's annual 10-K report (from their web site) and read “Risk Factors”. This shows you what company leaders feel are their top business risks. Knowing these issues can help you ask informed questions during interviews.
Private Companies

Read company press releases from their web site and their competitors. Read 10-K report from publicly traded competitors.

Interviewer Data
Search interviewer data on LinkedIn.com, Hoovers.com, ZoomInfo.com and HighBeam.com.
Use the company and interviewer information to create compelling and business focused questions that you will ask of your interviewers. This is an outstanding way to differentiate yourself from your competition and secure a great job offer.
Best of luck on your next interview. It is the most important moment in your search for a better position.

Healthcare JOBS!

Here are leads for several differnt types of employment for a large OC company. Healthcare is one of the more stable industries, we are told....good luck.

Note: Many exciting and important changes have been applied to our career site. Please return to http://careers-ext.questdiagnostics.com and read our applicant agreement, review and/or update your registration information and your resume. We will remove all resumes after 1 year of no activity.
